Text Encoding Inspector: UTF-8, Big5 & Shift_JIS

Inspect local bytes and BOMs, decode with an explicitly selected browser-supported encoding and export UTF-8 without pretending to detect the original encoding.

Enabling local controls…

1. Choose source and encoding

Data stays in page memory; no upload. Text / hex input and local files are limited to 1 MiB each; hex accepts complete byte pairs and ASCII whitespace only.

BOM recognition covers UTF-8 / UTF-16; a conflicting choice fails, a matching initial BOM is removed. Invalid bytes fail strictly without fallback. Decoded text cannot reveal its original encoding; export is UTF-8 only.

2. Decoded output

Choose source and encoding, then inspect.

How to use this tool

Choose a local file or enter hexadecimal bytes, select the known encoding and decode. Review errors and the decoded text before exporting UTF-8.

When not to use it

Successful decoding does not identify the source encoding. Wrong legacy encodings may produce valid but incorrect text. UTF-8 export does not preserve the original bytes or metadata.
